Why Kush Nug tho?
There’s a few options available for Pint X footpad accessories with more room: Future Motion offers their own rear flared footpad, but the Float Life’s Kush Nug Concave footpad came highly recommended and in two flavors: Lo for street, Hi for trails. Here’s what it brings to the table:
- The overall surface is a bit wider than the stock pad.
- The material is a little softer than the stock pad – cushioning road and trail vibrations.
- The angled design should help support your foot and reduce ankle stress for long rides.
- The pocket in the back of the pad helps lock you in for stability.
- The fresh grip tape looks good and helps stick to the board.
I ride mostly on the street, but I picked a Kush Nug Hi anyway because 1) I’m planning to explore local trails soon and 2) the roads where I live can be real janky: the more shock absorption the better!
Ordering from Craft & Ride: Mostly Smooth Sailing
Craft&Ride is one of the leading accessories vendors for the Onewheel family and they too kept showing up in recommendations. Buying a Kush Nug from the store is as straightforward as you would expect from any online store these days: head to the website, click a few buttons, and you’re set. Extra points: Craft & Ride was having their Summer Sale and the website never skipped a beat in spite of the traffic they no doubt must have been getting.
The included free shipping is nice, but beware! While your shipping label will get printed real quick, actual shipping can take a hot minute – especially when Craft & Ride is facing a large volume of orders. Items can also be out of stock and the site will still let you purchase them – which can be confusing as you will then find yourself waiting while your order is stuck in “Getting your order ready” limbo! I waited a while to get in touch with the team about my order, and quickly got an email explaining the situation and when to expect my order.
If you’re ordering a footpad (or lifters, a handle or a fender), make sure to take advantage of the trade-in program! Type in the code TRADE at checkout, and pop your used item in the box your order came with along with the included shipping label and return slip for $50 store credit. Make sure to check the trade-in program page for the fine print!
Installation: (Mostly) Painless
So you got your Kush Nug in the mail. Great! Time to get our hands dirty. All the hardware from your old pad will work with your new Kush Nug. Craft & Ride also includes a link to the Float Life video instructions and tools in your package as well.
Fair warning: on my unit, the mounting holes were a nudge off from the threads in the Pint X frame and box. Here’s a tip to save you some headaches: carefully balance your Onewheel standing, with the battery side up before mounting your new pad. You will be able to flex your new pad to line the mounting holes with the threads for the screws more easily this way.
Giving Back: The Trade-In Process
Remember that Craft & Ride trade-in program I mentioned? Here’s how it works:
- Take your old footpad and tuck it into the box your Kush Nug came in.
- Stick on the shipping label included with your order.
- Tape the box up, drop it off at the post office within 30 days.
- You’re done!
Easy peasy, that’s $50 store credit for you once the shop receives your old footpad! And if you take a picture of the yellow card included in your package with your gear and share it on social media, that’s another $25 of store credit for you.
First Kush Ride: When the Urethane Meets the Road
So now that we’re all set, how does the Kush Nug feel on the road? In a word…Interesting!
If a stock footpad is all you’ve ever floated on before, this will get a little used to. Kush Nug urethane is a different hardness from stock footpads, which can feel a little strange at first.
Remember these janky roads I was telling you about earlier? I went out for three sessions (20 minutes, 20 minutes, 45 minutes) to ride the Pint X across and along all the weird cracks and holes in the road I could find short of serious potholes. There was definitely more shock absorption than on the stock pad – anything that gets wobbles out of riding a board is great, and not just for comfort. Less wobbles means a safer riding experience! The larger surface of the pad also gives you extra control to handle whatever wobbles are left. Not as much as a front flared footpad does, but enough to notice!
How about that ride feel?
I found the ride experience more mellow and the board a little less squirrely due to the vibration absorption and added stability. I’m not an aggressive rider so it’s not a big deal, and maybe it’s just me! But if you’re looking for that very nimble experience , keep that in mind. For me, I can tell I will need a little practice to get these tight U-turns back in!
Now, let’s talk about that pocket in the middle of the pad. I’m not 100% sold on it yet! My foot is too big to nest in it and rests on the back pad instead. Finding the perfect spot for my foot to rest is taking some time. Nothing a little adjusting after getting on the wheel can’t help! Comparing the Kush Nug against Onewheel’s rear flared footpad would be very interesting, no doubt.
The Recap
So, is the Kush Nug Concave footpad worth the $100ish price tag?
For anybody looking for extra comfort and stability to your Pint X rides, I say yes. You will get some added control too, but that’s more the job of a front flared footpad. The Kush Nug absorbs vibrations better than the stock footpad and helps stabilize your ride, making your board safer. I’m still going to wear my usual footwear but it’s helping a lot!
My current footwear!
Footwear comes up a lot in the Onewheel community, especially in groups for older riders like me! I will do my best to update this block with my current gear. Some of the links below are Amazon affiliate links: at no additional cost to you, I may earn a commission if you make a purchase through these links!
- High top sneakers: these are comfortable, give me ankle support, and they are easy to clean. It’s easy to find low price options, so I don’t feel too bad when the shoes get destroyed eventually. I know some riders swear by Vans low profile skate shoes.
- Gel insoles: I need arch support, and maybe you do too! I use gel insoles and replace them as needed. I literally have insoles in all my shoes!
Overall I’d say the Kush Nug Concave foot pad is at the very least something you should try! Buy it brand new, buy it second hand, but give it a shot and see how it impacts your rides!
